In a major development affecting lakhs of medical aspirants across the country, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially announced the cancellation of the NEET (UG) 2026 examination conducted on May 3, 2026. The decision was taken following inputs received from central agencies and law enforcement authorities regarding alleged irregularities in the examination process.
In an official press release issued on Monday, the NTA stated that the matter had earlier been referred to central agencies on May 8 for independent verification and necessary action. After reviewing the findings and investigative inputs, the Agency, with the approval of the Government of India, decided to cancel the examination in the interest of maintaining transparency, fairness, and credibility in the national examination system.
According to the statement, the NTA concluded that the integrity of the existing examination process could not be allowed to stand in light of the findings shared by investigating authorities. Consequently, the NEET (UG) 2026 examination will now be re-conducted on fresh dates, which will be announced separately through official channels.
The Government of India has also decided to refer the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a comprehensive probe into the allegations linked to the examination. The NTA assured full cooperation with the CBI and stated that all necessary documents, records, and assistance would be provided for the inquiry.
The Agency acknowledged that the decision to cancel and reconduct the examination would cause significant inconvenience and stress to candidates and their families. However, it emphasized that preserving the trust and credibility of the national examination system was of paramount importance. The NTA noted that allowing a compromised examination process to continue would have caused greater long-term damage to public confidence.
In relief to students, the NTA clarified that all registration data, candidate details, and examination centres from the May 2026 cycle would automatically be carried forward to the re-examination. No fresh registration process will be required, and no additional examination fee will be charged from candidates. The Agency further informed that fees already paid by students would be refunded, while the reconducted examination would be organized using NTA’s internal resources.
The revised examination schedule, along with details regarding re-issued admit cards, will be communicated shortly through the official NTA platforms. Candidates and guardians have been advised to rely only on official notifications and avoid believing unverified reports circulating on social media.
NEET (UG), the country’s largest medical entrance examination, is conducted annually for admission into MBBS, BDS, and other undergraduate medical courses across India. The cancellation of the examination marks one of the most significant actions taken in the history of the national entrance test system and is expected to trigger nationwide discussions on examination security and accountability.
The NTA has urged students to remain calm and regularly check official portals for further updates regarding the fresh examination dates and procedural guidelines.
