The Indian Federation of Working Journalists (IFWJ) has strongly condemned the attack carried out by unidentified assailants on senior journalist Mrs. Nivedita Chakraborty of Rashtriya Samachar TV Channel in Agartala, Tripura.

In a strongly worded statement, IFWJ Secretary Pulipaka Ananda described the incident as a direct assault on freedom of expression and press freedom. He demanded immediate identification and stringent punishment for those involved in the attack.

The federation stated that deliberately targeting the residence of a journalist is completely unacceptable and represents a serious threat to democratic values and media independence. According to the statement, such attacks create fear among media professionals and undermine the constitutional right to free and independent journalism.

The IFWJ leadership urged the government to take decisive steps to stop increasing attacks on journalists across the country. The statement pointed out that states such as Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Delhi have already introduced laws aimed at protecting journalists, and emphasized that the recent incident highlights the urgent need for a similar Journalist Protection Law in Tripura as well.

The federation also appealed to the Tripura government to seriously consider enacting a special law to ensure the safety and security of journalists working in challenging circumstances.

Demanding exemplary punishment for the attackers, the IFWJ further called upon security agencies and law enforcement authorities to take effective preventive measures so that such incidents are not repeated in the future.

The incident has sparked concern among media circles in Tripura, with journalists and press organizations stressing the importance of safeguarding press freedom and ensuring a secure environment for media professionals.
