In a shocking incident raising fresh concerns over the safety of journalists and freedom of the press in Tripura, journalist and social media news channel anchor Nibedita Chakraborty of ‘Rashtriya Samachar’ alleged that her residence in Agartala came under a violent attack by a group of miscreants late on Saturday night. Despite reportedly submitting CCTV footage and photographs of the attackers to the police, no arrests have been made so far, prompting serious allegations of police inaction.
The incident comes shortly after reported attacks and intimidation involving content creator Madhabi Biswas of Jogendra nagar area of Agartala, intensifying concerns among media professionals and independent digital journalists in the state.
According to Nibedita Chakraborty, the attack took place at her rented residence in Ramnagar 11, Agartala. She claimed that around 10 to 15 armed miscreants suddenly stormed the area and attempted to break into the house. The attackers allegedly vandalized doors and windows and hurled stones continuously at the residence, creating panic among the family members.
Nibedita Chakraborty stated that she and her daughter sustained injuries after being hit by stones thrown during the attack. However, a major tragedy was reportedly prevented due to the courageous resistance of their two pet dogs, which aggressively blocked the attackers from entering the house. Unable to gain entry, the assailants eventually fled the scene.
The journalist has directly blamed a section of the ruling political establishment for orchestrating the assault. She alleged that her consistent reporting on public interest issues and exposure of anti-social activities had made her a target.
“I speak the truth, and many people cannot tolerate that. But such attacks and intimidation will not silence me,” Chakraborty said while condemning the incident.
She further alleged that certain anti-social elements, allegedly backed by influential political figures, were behind the planned attack. According to her, the assault was not a random act of violence but a deliberate attempt to threaten and suppress independent journalism.
The role of the police has also come under sharp criticism. Chakraborty alleged that despite informing the authorities and providing CCTV footage along with images of the attackers, the police failed to take prompt action or arrest the accused persons. She expressed disappointment over what she described as inadequate support from the administration during a moment of grave danger.
