Residents of Nabinchhara-Depachhara area in Tripura’s North district on Sunday alleged that assurances made by state minister Santana Chakma regarding renovation of a local Buddha temple remained unfulfilled years after they were made.

Locals and devotees expressed dissatisfaction over the condition of the temple, claiming promises given ahead of the 2018 Assembly elections had not materialised.

According to villagers, Chakma had assured construction of a new temple building at Nabinchhara-Depachhara in Pecharthal subdivision and announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh for the project during her election campaign.

However, residents alleged that the temple structure still remains incomplete, causing inconvenience to devotees, particularly during the monsoon season.

“Before the elections, the representative personally visited the area and assured us that the temple building would be completed and financial support would be provided. But even after eight years, no work has started,” a villager alleged while speaking to reporters.

Residents claimed repeated attempts to contact the minister’s office over the issue had failed to produce any response.

The villagers also objected to what they described as the politicisation of religious institutions and urged the authorities to fulfil commitments made to the local community.

“We do not want politics in the name of religion. If promises are made, they should be fulfilled. Eight years is a long time,” another resident said.
