Tripura Pradesh Congress on Sunday accused the ruling alliance in the state of attempting to deepen ethnic divisions in tribal areas ahead of upcoming elections, alleging that recent unrest in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) was politically motivated.
Addressing a press conference, Congress chief spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty claimed tensions in ADC areas were being “deliberately fuelled” in the run-up to the village committee elections and the 2028 Assembly polls.
“The incidents taking place in tribal areas are not isolated. There is a systematic attempt to create division and polarisation for political gain,” Chakraborty alleged.
Referring to recent protests and the 48-hour shutdown in Mandai following the alleged torching of a vehicle belonging to a youth leader of TIPRA Motha, he accused the administration of failing to act firmly against those responsible for disturbances.
Chakraborty further alleged that political rivalry among ruling alliance partners during the ADC elections had intensified ethnic tension in the state.
“The people are being distracted from core issues such as unemployment, corruption, deteriorating law and order and public welfare,” he said.
The Congress leader also expressed concern over alleged incidents of extortion threats, violent clashes and political intimidation in parts of the state, warning that divisive politics could harm Tripura’s long-standing communal harmony.
Drawing parallels with past ethnic unrest in the Northeast, including the situation in Manipur, Chakraborty appealed to both tribal and non-tribal communities to remain united and resist attempts to create discord.
