The State Election Commission (SEC) of Tripura has formally initiated the preparatory process for the upcoming Village Committee (VC) elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), following directions from the Supreme Court to complete the elections within June this year.
As part of the election process, the SEC has issued a detailed notification regarding the preparation and finalisation of polling station lists across the ADC areas. The move is being considered a major step towards conducting the long-awaited Village Committee elections in the tribal autonomous council areas.
According to the notification, Block Development Officers (BDOs) have been entrusted with the responsibility of preparing draft lists of polling stations under their respective jurisdictions. The SEC has directed that the serial numbers of polling stations should be arranged geographically from the north-western side to the south-eastern side for administrative convenience and uniformity.
The draft publication of polling station lists will be made on May 11, after which political parties, local organisations, and citizens will be allowed to submit claims and objections till May 15. The SEC stated that all objections and suggestions will be scrutinised and disposed of by May 16, and the final list of polling stations is expected to be published on May 18.
Sources in the SEC said the draft polling station lists would be prepared block-wise covering all Village Committee constituencies under the TTAADC. Copies of the draft lists will also be supplied to recognised political parties for feedback and verification.
At the same time, the SEC has already started the process of revising electoral rolls for the Village Committee elections. The draft voter list is expected to be published on May 11, and claims and objections regarding inclusion or correction of voter names can be submitted till May 15. After disposal of objections, the final electoral roll may be published within this month.
Official sources indicated that nearly 2,600 polling stations may be set up for the elections across around 587 Village Committees, involving nearly four thousand seats.
The SEC is also likely to announce the election schedule shortly after publication of the final voter list and polling station details. Discussions are reportedly underway regarding security arrangements for the elections. The Commission may seek reports and suggestions from District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police of all eight districts to ensure peaceful polling in sensitive and interior tribal areas.
The upcoming Village Committee elections are politically significant as they will be the first major electoral battle in the ADC after recent political realignments in the hill areas. In the previous ADC elections, TIPRA Motha had secured a landslide victory by winning 24 out of 28 seats, while the BJP managed only a few seats. Political observers believe the VC elections will once again test the organisational strength of major parties in the tribal belt.
Several political parties have already intensified grassroots activities in ADC areas in anticipation of the polls. The elections are expected to witness a keen contest, particularly between regional tribal forces and national parties seeking to expand their influence in the hills.
The SEC has reiterated that all preparations are being carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (Conduct of Election) Rules, 1996, and that every effort will be made to conduct the elections in a free, fair, and peaceful manner.
