Tension gripped the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura’s Sepahijala district after three alleged Bangladeshi smugglers were killed and several others injured during a late-night confrontation with Border Security Force (BSF) personnel near the Pathariyadhar border under Madhupur police station.

According to sources, the incident took place near Gate No. 101 along the international border when a group of suspected smugglers allegedly attempted to transport fish fingerlings and other contraband items across the border under the cover of darkness. BSF personnel, who had reportedly laid an ambush after receiving intelligence inputs, intercepted the group.

BSF claimed that when BSF jawans challenged the smugglers and asked them to stop, the group allegedly attacked the personnel with sharp weapons, stones, and bricks. The BSF initially issued repeated warnings and tried to disperse the crowd. However, when the situation allegedly turned violent and uncontrollable, the troops opened fire in self-defence using Pump Action Guns (PAG).

Three Bangladeshi nationals were killed in the firing, while at least five others reportedly sustained serious injuries. The bodies of two deceased individuals were later handed over to Bangladesh authorities through a flag meeting between border forces of the two countries.

The firing incident has triggered widespread discussion and controversy across the border region, with fresh allegations emerging regarding the existence of an organized smuggling network and the alleged involvement of certain local intermediaries and police and political personnel's.

Local residents and sources in the border belt alleged that smuggling activities in the area have continued for a long time involving items such as fish fingerlings, narcotics, clothes, diesel, and other goods. Some villagers claimed that whenever BSF intensified anti-smuggling operations or strict surveillance, influential local figures allegedly intervened and attempted to pressure security personnel.
