The state government is concerned over the extremely low conviction rate in NDPS cases based on drug peddling and smuggling . According to latest information the rate of conviction in the NDPS cases currently stands at a paltry 3.06% which is attributed to corrupt practices and incompetence of state police and lack of evidence, specially lack of witnesses.

Official sources said that the chief minister Dr Manik Saha has repeatedly stressed the importance of dealing the NDPS cases strictly as per law and in the hard way in the interest of the state but this is not reflected in police handling of such cases related to seizure of contraband materials and arrest made. Sources said that the high court justice (retired) Arindam Lodh had once passed an order banning bail for NDPS case accused for at least six months but this is not being followed because of perfidy of a section of police officers. They weaken the cases in lieu of hefty payments at the stage of putting them forward initially and then make light of the charge-sheets.

Sources however said that the government is deeply worried over the matter, specially the future of young generation and students. A high level meeting on the issue is likely to be called soon to discuss all issues pertaining to NDPS cases and their handling by police.
