Two and half yearold infant dies by drowning , grief and mourning in Banshtali ADC village under Charilam

In yet another heart rending tragedy a two and half year old tribal infant drowned to death in Ramdas Para area under Banshtoli ADC village under Charilam block in Sepahijala district yesterday, leaving her parents in terrible grief. Giving details of the incident police sources said that Arisha Debbama (2.5) , daughter of auto-rickshaw driver Santosh Debbarm and his wife Matushi Debbarma , had been playing with her elder brother Amal (5) on the courtyard yesterday around 11-00 in the noon at a time when their mother was busy doing housing chore while the father Santosh had gone out on work.

While playing about in the courtyard of the house, located on an upland, the siblings had strayed on to the bank of a pond belonging to the family below the upland. After some time their mother Matushi enquired of her son Amal about Arisha but Amal said he had not noticed. Getting concerned Matushi started looking for her daughter and also informed her husband Santosh about Arisha having gone missing. The husband returned home at once and they launched a joint search operation with help from neighbours . Finally it occurred to Santosh that his daughter might have slipped off into the pond and he jumped into it. After searching for some time Santosh finally found Arisha lying still on the pon bed. Having lifted her he , accompanied by a few neighbours, took Arisha to Bisramganj hospital . But the doctor there referred the girl to the Bishalgarh hospital where the doctor on duty declared the infant Arisha ‘ dead on arrival’-that is, she had died being brought to the hospital . Arisha’s father Santosh Debbarma cried out in agony over the death of his dear daughter but finally brought her dead body home after the post-mortem.

Arisha was cremated through performing of all religious rituals in the Banshtoli crematorium. The tragic death of Arisha has left her parents and all neighbours in a deep grief and mourning . Police sources said that the guardians of children, specially in rural and hilly areas should be more careful about keeping watch over their children when at play .
