The Meteorological Centre, Agartala under the India Meteorological Department today has issued an updated weather warning forecasting moderate thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty to squally winds, and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall across all districts of Tripura over the next three days, raising concerns over possible disruptions and damages in several parts of the state.
According to the press release issued at 1230 IST on April 30, the state has already witnessed significant weather activity in the past 24 hours, with the highest rainfall recorded at 96.6 mm in South Tripura’s KVK-South area, followed by 58.6 mm in Teliamura under Khowai district, while wind speeds reached as high as 98 kmph in Teliamura, indicating the intensity of the prevailing weather system. Other districts such as Gomati, West Tripura, and Dhalai also experienced considerable rainfall and strong winds, reflecting a widespread impact across the state.
The forecast for the next three days suggests that Sepahijala and South Tripura districts are likely to be the most affected, with heavy to very heavy rainfall ranging between 7 cm and 20 cm expected at isolated locations, while the remaining districts may experience heavy rainfall between 7 cm and 11 cm. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with speeds reaching 40 to 50 kmph are very likely to occur across all districts during this period, increasing the risk of weather-related hazards.
The department has warned of multiple potential impacts due to the adverse weather conditions, including poor visibility leading to traffic congestion, waterlogging in low-lying areas, possible flash floods, landslides or mudslides in vulnerable zones, and damage to crops, especially those at maturity stage. Strong winds and lightning may also cause damage to kutcha houses, uprooting of trees, disruption of power and communication lines, and risks to human and animal safety in open areas.
IMD Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, avoid waterlogged and landslide-prone areas, stay indoors during thunderstorms, and refrain from taking shelter under trees or near electrical conductors. Farmers have been urged to suspend agricultural operations temporarily, postpone sowing activities, and take protective measures for crops to minimize losses.
With the weather system expected to remain active till May 3.
