In a significant development from Tripura’s Sepahijala district, the District Magistrate and Collector Dr Siddharth Shiv Jaiswal, IAS, has upheld an eviction order in a land-related case involving alleged illegal occupation of government land in Boxanagar under Sonamura subdivision. The case, registered as Revenue Case No. 02/2026 under the Tripura Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorized Occupants) Act, 1982, has exposed serious irregularities in the use of public land and raised wider concerns about administrative oversight and possible political involvement.

According to the official court order, four individuals

namely, Moynal Hossain, Rahul Amin, Kaucher Ahmed and Sourav Hossain

were found to have unauthorizedly occupied government khas land and constructed a market like RCC structures on it. The case originated from inquiry reports submitted by the concerned authorities, which confirmed that the land recorded under the Government of Tripura had been encroached upon without any legal sanction.

During the proceedings, the occupants claimed that Boxanagar Gram Panchayat had permitted them to construct structures on the land and had even collected Rs. 6000 as rent. However, the court found no legal basis for such permission. It was clearly observed that the Panchayat has no authority to allot or lease government land without prior approval from the competent authority, namely the Revenue Department of the Government of Tripura. The accused also failed to produce any valid allotment or lease order to support their claim.

The court further examined official land records and categorically established that the ownership of the land rests with the Government of Tripura. It was also noted that the name of the Panchayat does not appear anywhere in the relevant land records, thereby nullifying the legitimacy of any resolution passed at the Panchayat level regarding the said land. As a result, the court concluded that the occupation of the land by the individuals was completely unauthorized.

After detailed hearings, including the final hearing conducted on 24 April 2026, the District Magistrate rejected the appeal filed by the occupants and upheld the earlier eviction order issued by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Sonamura. The occupants have now been directed to vacate the land within 30 days, failing which eviction will be carried out using necessary force as per the provisions of the law.

The case has triggered serious concerns at the local level, particularly regarding the role of grassroots institutions and the apparent misuse of authority in dealing with government land. The fact that money was allegedly collected in the name of rent without any legal sanction has further deepened the controversy.

Meanwhile, according to local sources, the issue is being viewed as part of a larger land scam, and allegations are emerging that local MLA Tafajjal Husain is the main mastermind behind the entire operation. However, it is important to note that these allegations have not been mentioned in the DMs official court order and no formal charges or findings have been recorded against him in this case so far.

The incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for stricter monitoring of government land, greater accountability at the Panchayat level, and transparent mechanisms to prevent misuse of public resources in Tripura.
