MMD College holds awareness programme on Rainwater harvesting

The National Service Scheme(NSS) unit of Michael Madhusudan Dutta (MMD) College, Sabroom today organized an awareness programme on rainwater harvesting. The event was attended by Dr. Anupam Guha, Principal, prof. Ajoy Debbarma, College NSS advisory committee member along with Dr. Tapan Shil, Dr. Mahua Chowdhury, Dr Uma Begum, other faculty members and students. Recent days have seen continuous heavy rains, causing temporary disruptions across the state. Despite this, rainwater conservation is still possible.

Rainwater harvesting involves collecting rainwater from rooftops, open fields, or roads and storing it for later use. It is primarily used to address water shortages, increase groundwater levels, and prevent flooding. This eco-friendly and cost-effective method provides water for drinking, household chores, and agricultural activities. Dr. Anupam Guha emphasized this in the discussion. Dr. Shil explained that in the initial stage, rainwater from rooftops is collected and then channeled through pipes to a water filter, storing it in underground tanks for use when needed.

Rainwater can also be directed into the ground through borewells or pits to increase underground water levels. Small ponds or reservoirs can be constructed to hold rainwater, which can then be used for agriculture and other purposes. By conserving rainwater in this way, it becomes a vital resource for daily use in water-scarce regions. With water shortages occurring in various cities across the country, it is crucial to prevent water wastage, the speakers stressed. The programme called upon everyone to become more aware of water conservation efforts and its longterm benefits.
