In Tripura, Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, founder of Tipra Motha, has triggered fresh political debate after his recent moves indicated a complex strategy ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections. Although he has been publicly critical of the Bharatiya Janata Party, political observers believe that he may be working in tacit understanding with the party’s central leadership in New Delhi, using tribal identity issues in Tripura to build pressure and strengthen his long-term ambition of becoming Chief Minister.

The speculation intensified following his meeting with Indrasena Reddy Nallu at Lok Bhavan yesterday. After the meeting, Debbarma indicated that Tipra Motha MLAs would support the Women’s Reservation Bill, which proposes 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament and State Assemblies and has faced hurdles due to opposition disruptions. At the same time, he signaled a significant political shift by stating that from the April 30 Assembly session, Tipra Motha members would no longer function as part of the BJP-led coalition in practice. The party is also set to skip a crucial meeting convened by Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha at his residence, where BJP, Tipra Motha, and IPFT legislators were expected to participate.

Sources indicate that Debbarma is currently pursuing two key political objectives, firstly, removal of Chief Minister Manik Saha from his position and the formation of a new ministry led by a Chief Minister aligned with his political direction. It is being suggested that if these demands are not met, Tipra Motha may sever its political relationship with the BJP entirely. His meeting with the Governor has therefore generated considerable speculation in political circles.

In a statement shared on media, Debbarma said that his discussion with the Governor focused on the socio-economic development of people in the ADC (Autonomous District Council) areas. However, it also emerged that Tipra Motha’s support for the Women’s Reservation Bill was clarified soon after the meeting. Party insiders have indicated that after the results of Assembly elections in five states are announced on May 4, BJP and Tipra Motha leaders may hold another round of talks in New Delhi, likely in the second week of May, which could determine the future of the alliance.

Debbarma had earlier told journalists that he was willing to meet Chief Minister Manik Saha to discuss ADC-related socio-economic issues if time was provided. Meanwhile, his meeting with the Governor has already taken place, bringing the ADC issue to the forefront. According to reliable sources, discussions included 38 bills passed by the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council between 2007 and 2025 aimed at improving governance and development in tribal areas, none of which have received approval so far except for the Customary Law.

These pending bills reportedly include crucial legislations related to land rights, policing, education, socio-economic entitlements, infrastructure development such as roads and drinking water, healthcare, and electricity rights, all of which have been awaiting approval for nearly two decades. The issue of a constitutional solution was also raised during the meeting, focusing on addressing long-standing demands in Northeast India, including protection of language, land, and socio-economic rights, along with access to basic needs such as food, clothing, and housing.
