The popular sunflower garden in Charilam was extensively damaged after a sudden nor'wester storm lashed parts of Tripura early Tuesday, dealing a severe blow to a local farmer who had developed the site into a modest tourist attraction.
The garden, cultivated by farmer Chittaranjan Majumdar, had in recent months drawn steady footfall from across the state. Known for its vibrant blooms, the site had emerged as a recreational spot, particularly among youngsters who frequented the location for photography and leisure.
According to the farmer, strong winds accompanying the storm flattened a significant portion of the crop, breaking stems and destroying most of the flowers. The damage comes after consecutive spells of Kalboisakhi over the past two days, compounding losses.
Majumdar said the garden had become his primary source of income through a combination of entry fees and flower sales. He noted that, in the absence of the storm, he had expected additional earnings of around Rs 30,000 from ongoing sales.
Describing the loss as devastating, he appealed for government assistance to recover from the setback and revive the cultivation.
Observers in the agriculture sector have raised concerns over the increasing frequency and intensity of such storms in Tripura, warning that small and marginal farmers engaged in horticulture and vegetable cultivation remain particularly vulnerable to sudden weather events.
