The India Meteorological Department has issued a fresh weather warning for Tripura, forecasting moderate to severe thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds, and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next three days.
According to the Meteorological Centre in Agartala, thunderstorms with lightning and squally winds reaching speeds of 60–80 kmph are very likely to occur in parts of Khowai and West districts on Day 1 (April 28–29). Other districts may experience winds of 50–60 kmph, along with widespread rainfall.
The forecast indicates heavy to very heavy rainfall ranging between 7–20 cm in several districts, particularly Khowai, West, North, Unakoti, and Dhalai. Similar weather conditions are expected to persist through Day 2 and Day 3, with continued thunderstorm activity and heavy rainfall across multiple regions.
In the past 24 hours, Tripura has already experienced significant rainfall and strong winds. Dhalai district recorded the highest rainfall at 159 mm in Kamalpur, while wind speeds peaked at 111 kmph in Chhailengta. Other districts like Khowai, Unakoti, and North Tripura also reported substantial rainfall and gusty winds.
The IMD has warned that the adverse weather may lead to:
Poor visibility and traffic disruption due to intense rainfall
Waterlogging and flash floods in low-lying areas
Landslides or mudslides in vulnerable locations
Damage to kutcha houses, trees, and infrastructure
Disruption of power and communication lines
Crop damage, especially to standing vegetables and plantations
Thunderstorms may also pose serious risks due to lightning strikes, strong winds, and hailstorms, potentially causing injury to people and livestock.
Residents have been advised to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay away from open fields, water bodies, and electrical conductors. Farmers are urged to suspend field activities during lightning events and take precautions to protect crops from water stagnation and soil erosion.
Authorities have also recommended securing loose objects, avoiding shelter under trees, and unplugging electrical appliances during storms.
