Even as power infrastructure upgrades continue across Tripura under multiple government schemes, serious questions are being raised over their effectiveness. Over the past few years, the replacement of electricity poles and small transformers has been carried out regularly in different parts of the state. However, despite these ongoing efforts, the situation on the ground tells a different story. Every year, during the seasonal Kalbaishakhi storms, hundreds of electricity poles and transformers are uprooted or collapse across various districts. This recurring damage has led to widespread power outages, disruption of daily life, and growing public concern over the durability and quality of the work being undertaken. The contradiction between continuous infrastructure replacement and repeated large-scale damage has raised doubts among residents about whether the works are being executed properly or if temporary fixes are being prioritized over long-term resilience. The issue gains further significance as Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) continues to receive substantial financial and institutional support for strengthening power infrastructure. Yet, the annual collapse of poles and transformers during storms highlights possible gaps in planning, execution, or monitoring. As another storm season unfolds, the recurring failures are intensifying demands for accountability, better quality control, and a more durable power infrastructure system that can withstand natural calamities in Tripura.
Meanwhile, reacting to the latest storm damage, the state’s Power Minister stated on social media that a powerful storm has caused widespread disruption to electricity services and infrastructure across the state, including Agartala. According to the statement, numerous electric poles have fallen, wires have snapped, and tree branches and bamboo have damaged transmission lines, leading to major outages. The Minister further informed that engineers and workers of Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited, along with disaster management teams and personnel from multiple departments, have been working since morning to restore normalcy. While electricity has been restored in some areas, many regions are still facing disruptions, partly due to safety concerns. Expressing regret for the inconvenience caused to citizens, the Minister appealed to the public to cooperate with electricity department staff during the restoration process amid the natural disaster.
