Steep rise in water level in Rudrasagar lake in Melaghar and heavy leakages in the temporary embankment constructed around the lake have led to flooding of large paddy fields belonging to thousands of farmers created serious resentment among poor farmers. Sources said that in case the heavy rainfall that commenced this morning continues the entire paddy fields over thousands of acres around the lake will be flooded , destroying the entire paddy crop.

Sources from Melaghar said that they had brought this threat to the notice of authorities earlier but no action was taken and out of compulsion the farmers today launched a blockade programme on the crucial Agartala-Sonamura road in Battala road close to the sluice gate. As the blockade continued for two hours large number of vehicles and people moving on the road got stranded , causing immense suffering of people.

After being informed of the matter, the officer in charge of Soanmura police station Tapas Das reached the blockade spot and spoke to the agitating farmers and assured them that he would have the temporary embankment opened to save the paddy fields of farmers from flooding and resultant destruction of crops. The OC Tapas Das also got a dozer brought to the place and opened up the temporary embankment to flush out the accumulating water. Satisfied by the step taken by the OC (Sonamura) the farmers also lifted their blockade and normal traffic movement resumed on the Agartala-Sonamura road.
