Tension gripped the Jharjhariya area under Belonia subdivision in South Tripura after a series of cattle theft incidents triggered strong protests by local residents. Alleging repeated police inaction and negligence, villagers on Tuesday morning staged a blockade on a national highway, bringing traffic to a complete standstill for several hours.

According to local sources, cattle theft has become a nightly occurrence in the area over the past few weeks. Despite multiple complaints lodged at the local police station, residents claim that no effective measures were taken to prevent the thefts or apprehend the culprits. Adding to their frustration, villagers allege that police personnel advised them to stay awake at night and guard their own cattle instead of ensuring law enforcement. The situation escalated when protesters openly accused the police of corruption in the presence of South Tripura Superintendent of Police, Mourya Krishna C, IPS. Agitated locals claimed that some police officials were allegedly receiving commissions from cattle smugglers, allowing the illegal activities to continue unchecked. The accusations were raised publicly during the protest, intensifying the standoff.Eyewitnesses reported heated exchanges between the villagers and police officials at the protest site. Demonstrators demanded immediate arrest of those involved in the thefts and strict action to curb the recurring incidents. They also called for accountability within the police department. The highway blockade caused significant disruption to vehicular movement, with long queues of stranded vehicles seen on both sides of the road. Senior administrative officials later reached the spot and held discussions with the protesters. The blockade was eventually lifted after authorities assured swift and concrete action.Police sources stated that the allegations are being examined and that necessary steps will be taken against those found responsible. However, a section of the local population remains skeptical, saying the real test lies in how effectively the administration follows through on its promises.

The incident highlights growing concerns over rural security and law enforcement accountability in parts of South Tripura, as residents demand stronger action to restore safety and trust.
