In the aftermath of a devastating storm accompanied by heavy rainfall, large parts of Tripura have been thrown into crisis, with extensive damage to homes, infrastructure, and power supply severely disrupting daily life across multiple districts.
The storm, which struck late at night, uprooted trees, damaged electric poles, and left key urban and rural areas, including Agartala, Kailashahar, Kumarghat, Belonia, and Pecharthal
to Sabroom grappling with prolonged power outages. In Agartala, several roads were blocked due to fallen trees and waterlogging, bringing normal life to a standstill.
Residents across Unakoti district, particularly in Machmara under Pecharthal block, reported being without electricity for over 20 hours. Similar complaints poured in from Belonia’s South Sonai Chari area, where locals claimed that electricity had not been restored even after three days, with no sign of electricians reaching the affected zones. Frustrated citizens from Badharghat and other areas said they were unable to cook or manage basic necessities due to the outage.
In Kailashahar, residents expressed concern over continuous power disruptions for several days, urging authorities to treat the issue with urgency. Complaints also emerged regarding the inefficiency of outsourced agencies responsible for electricity services, with allegations that they failed to deliver adequate support from Kailashahar to Sabroom.
Amid the chaos, emotional appeals have surfaced from affected individuals.
Officials from the power department acknowledged that restoration work is underway but cautioned that supply cannot be resumed immediately in all areas due to safety protocols. Power will only be restored after confirmation from all field units to ensure public and worker safety.
The government has urged citizens to remain patient and cooperate with ongoing efforts, while also prioritizing the restoration of electricity and essential services. Meanwhile, some voices from the public have suggested temporary closure of schools until normalcy returns.
As Tripura battles the aftermath of this natural calamity, the urgency of efficient disaster response, infrastructure resilience, and timely relief distribution has come sharply into focus.
