In a politically significant development, Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, founder of Tipra Motha, has called for a complete overhaul of the administrative system to curb corruption, even as serious questions remain unanswered regarding past allegations of job and financial irregularities in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC).

Over the past five years, multiple allegations of job-related and financial corruption have surfaced in the ADC. However, there has been no visible investigation, nor has any accused individual been identified or punished so far, raising concerns over accountability.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of newly elected Members of District Council (MDCs), held at the Khumulwng Council Bhavan on Monday, Pradyot Kishore Debbarma stressed that systemic reform is essential to ensure good governance. He stated that restructuring the administrative system would be a key priority under the new ADC leadership.

However, despite this strong stance on reform, he remained silent on what action would be taken against those allegedly involved in earlier job scams. Notably, ahead of the recent ADC elections, he had announced the cancellation of all job offers reportedly issued without interviews. Yet, no formal investigation into these irregularities has been initiated.

Adding to the controversy, during the pre-election campaign, Debbarma had stated that Tipra Motha leaders were not fighting for power but for “Thansa” (unity and identity), and had urged party members not to be driven by the lure of positions. However, following the party’s return to power in the ADC, a contrasting picture is now emerging, with increasing interest among leaders in securing positions.

At Monday’s ceremony, 24 MDCs from Tipra Motha took oath. However, the party leadership failed to announce the Chief Executive Member (CEM) and Executive Council on the same day. According to Jagadish Debbarma, it may take another seven days for the finalization of these key posts.

Meanwhile, four elected MDCs from the Bharatiya Janata Party boycotted the ceremony as announced earlier. Leaders from the Indian National Congress and Communist Party of India (Marxist) were also absent. The event also saw the presence of Tripura Government’s Law Secretary Shankari Das and ADC Chief Executive Officer Raval Hamendra Kumar.

Earlier, a BJP delegation had met Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, alleging large-scale job sale and financial corruption in the ADC. However, no action has been reported from the Governor’s office so far.

As the new ADC administration begins its journey with promises of systemic reform and good governance, delays in leadership announcements and the absence of action on past corruption allegations continue to cast a shadow over its credibility.
