In a significant policy shift aimed at ensuring transparency and grassroots accountability, Tipra Motha Supremo Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma has announced that only elected Village Council members will be appointed as Chairpersons of zonal and sub-zonal bodies under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC).
The announcement comes shortly after Tipra Motha regained control of the ADC headquarters in Khumulwng for a second term. The move is being seen as part of a broader strategy to avoid administrative controversies and strengthen development initiatives across ADC areas.
In a video message released on Sunday, Pradyot said he had consulted various stakeholders before arriving at the decision. He clarified that the practice of appointing nominated individuals as zonal and sub-zonal Chairpersons will be discontinued.
Instead, individuals elected in the upcoming Village Council elections will be selected for these crucial posts. Political observers believe this is a major shift, as these positions carry significant influence, and leaders have traditionally lobbied heavily for nominations.
With this change, competition is expected to intensify in the Village Council elections, as aspiring leaders now see it as the only route to these powerful posts.
Pradyot also revealed that he had approached the Supreme Court demanding Village Council elections. Following court directions, the elections are expected to be held in June. Administrative preparations for the polls have reportedly already begun, further fueling political activity within the party.
In another major initiative, Pradyot announced that student organisations, including the Twipra Students Federation and other Tiprasa student bodies, will be tasked with assessing the ground reality of the education system in ADC areas.
Within the next 8–10 days, 6–7 teams will be formed and deployed across all districts under ADC jurisdiction. These teams will conduct surprise inspections of schools and prepare detailed reports.
The review will cover
School infrastructure and facilities, Student enrollment and attendance including Teacher strength and regularity.
Teams may visit districts multiple times if required, and their travel and operational expenses will be covered by TTAADC.
Based on the findings submitted by these teams, the ADC administration plans to introduce reforms to improve the quality of education. Pradyot emphasized that decisions on infrastructure and policy changes will be taken only after thorough ground-level assessment.
