Demand Grows for Additional Crematorium and Burial Facilities in Agartala Amid Rising Public Hardship

A growing demand has emerged among residents of Agartala for the expansion of cremation and burial infrastructure, as the existing facilities, particularly the Battala crematorium struggle to cope with increasing pressure and seasonal flood challenges.

The Battala crematorium, currently the primary facility serving the Agartala Municipal Corporation area and its surrounding suburbs, remains heavily relied upon not only by city residents but also by people arriving from distant locations, including those bringing deceased individuals from Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, IGM Hospital and Tripura Medical College and Hospital. Due to this overwhelming dependency, the crematorium frequently becomes overcrowded, causing logistical difficulties and emotional distress for grieving families.

The situation worsens significantly during the monsoon season. Heavy rains often lead to waterlogging and flooding at the Battala site, making cremation activities extremely difficult and, at times, nearly impossible. Although a small alternative arrangement has recently been initiated nearby, it remains insufficient to meet the growing demand.

Adding to the concern is the need for burial grounds for specific communities such as the Debnath and Yogi groups, who traditionally practice burial instead of cremation. Despite a significant population of these communities residing in and around Agartala, they often face challenges in finding appropriate spaces for conducting last rites.

Historically, several cremation sites existed across the Agartala city, including locations in Barjala near Panchabati, Indranagar, Badharghat, Chandrapur, and areas north of Pragati School in Bhati Abhoynagar. However, most of these sites are either defunct or no longer in active use.

One notable but underutilized site lies along the banks of the Katakhal in Indranagar. Local residents and civic voices have suggested that if this Indranagar cremation ground is redeveloped with proper infrastructure, adequate manpower, and elevated land to prevent flooding, it could significantly ease the burden on Battala and provide a viable alternative for the public.

Citizens are now urging authorities to either expand the existing Battala crematorium or establish a new, well-equipped cremation and burial facility in or around Agartala. Such a move, they argue, is essential not only for improving accessibility and reducing congestion but also for ensuring dignity and convenience in performing last rites.

With Agartala’s population steadily growing, the issue of adequate cremation and burial infrastructure is becoming increasingly urgent, calling for immediate attention and action from the concerned authorities.
