BJP to contest VC polls sans any alliance: Tripura CM

CM Dr Manik Saha on Saturday announced that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will contest the ensuing Village Council (VC) elections in areas under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) independently, ruling out any alliance.

Speaking to reporters after an organisational meeting at the party’s state headquarters, Saha said the earlier decision to go solo in the TTAADC elections had been reviewed and reaffirmed. He maintained that the party would adopt the same strategy for the Village Council polls.

Village Councils serve as rural local bodies in TTAADC areas and function under a single-tier system, unlike the three-tier panchayat structure followed in non-tribal regions.

The Chief Minister said the party would now focus on strengthening its organisational base in tribal areas. Referring to a post-election review, he noted that the BJP would intensify efforts in regions where its presence remains weak.

Saha also raised concerns over alleged forcible occupation of VC offices after the recent elections. Without naming individuals, he warned that no elected body can be taken over by force and stressed that legal provisions must be upheld. He added that repeated such actions could adversely affect public confidence.

He further informed that feedback was collected from candidates and party functionaries during the meeting to assess performance. The VC elections, pending for nearly a decade, are scheduled to be held in 2026 following directions from the Supreme Court of India.
