Serious allegations of financial irregularities have emerged from Charilam in Tripura, where local residents have accused contractors and political functionaries of siphoning off government funds without executing sanctioned development works.

The controversy comes in the wake of a recent government directive mandating the installation of signboards at project sites. These boards are required to clearly mention details of developmental works along with the allocated funds, aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability.

According to complaints received from locals in the Rajiv Colony area under Aralia Gram Panchayat in Charilam block of Sepahijala district, no actual work was carried out for projects such as drain construction and brick soling, despite funds reportedly being sanctioned and shown as utilized.

Residents alleged that contractors, installed the mandatory signboards under the cover of night and left the area without initiating any work. Suspecting foul play, locals called media representatives to highlight the issue and bring it to public attention.

Villagers further claimed that this is not an isolated incident. They alleged the existence of a nexus involving sections of the administration and contractors who have been misappropriating funds across multiple government projects in the area.

Previously, residents had little visibility into the specifics of development works being undertaken in their localities. However, with the enforcement of signboards displaying project details, rural communities are now better equipped to monitor implementation and detect discrepancies.

Similar instances have reportedly been uncovered in several parts of the state, where projects exist only on paper while funds have already been withdrawn. The new transparency measures, though exposing irregularities, have also sparked demands for stricter monitoring and accountability.

Local residents have urged the administration to conduct thorough investigations into the alleged scams and take strict action against those found responsible, ensuring that public funds are used for their intended purposes.
