A fresh political controversy has erupted in Tripura following the allocation of financial assistance to allegedly affected BJP workers. Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury has strongly questioned the state government’s approach, alleging selective use of public funds and raising concerns over rising political violence.
Chaudhury criticized the move, asking why similar support was not extended to opposition supporters in the past. He emphasized that the Chief Minister’s relief fund should be used impartially for all citizens affected by violence, regardless of political affiliation.
Referring to Tripura’s political history, Chaudhury stated that during the Left Front era, parties like TIPRA Motha did not exist, and rejected allegations that the CPI(M) encouraged political violence. He instead blamed the spread of violence on the Congress during the 1988 period and on the BJP since 2018. According to him, attempts by some BJP leaders to shift blame onto the CPI(M) are politically motivated.
The opposition leader also highlighted the emerging situation following the ADC elections, pointing to reports of attacks on BJP workers, incidents of arson, and forced displacement of families. At the same time, he noted what he described as a contradictory political picture, where top leaders of TIPRA Motha have been seen sharing platforms with BJP MLAs, fueling speculation about evolving political alignments.
Chaudhury argued that these parallel developments raise deeper questions about the state’s political direction. “When grassroots workers repeatedly face threats to their safety and dignity, it naturally creates doubts about the real nature of politics today,” he remarked.
He further added that people are increasingly questioning whether politics in Tripura is being reduced to mere power equations, rather than addressing the concerns and security of ordinary citizens.
The developments have intensified political debate across the state, with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party yet to issue a detailed response to the allegations.
