Tension escalated in Tripura’s Gomati district after BJP workers locked the main gate of Kakraban Police Station, protesting the release on bail of three accused involved in the vandalism of MLA Abhishek Debroy’s vehicle.

According to reports, the incident stems from growing dissatisfaction among a section of ruling party supporters, who alleged that the police failed to perform their duties properly, resulting in the accused securing bail from the Police station. The protestors expressed anger by placing a lock on the police station gate and raising slogans that reflected both support for Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha and criticism of the police administration. Some slogans notably included tha 'Manik Saha Zindabad, but shame on his department’s police stations.'

This development comes shortly after a similar act by supporters of Tipra Motha last year in Udaipur, where the District Magistrate’s office was locked during a protest. The agitation was reportedly triggered by allegations that District Magistrate TK Chakma, an IAS officer, did not meet Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma during a holiday night. In that incident, protestors locked the office premises with officials and staff inside, in the presence of Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak, IPS.

The recurrence of such incidents, this time involving supporters of the ruling BJP, has raised concerns about law and order and political discipline in the state. Critics have pointed out the irony that earlier opposition parties like CPI(M) would protest alleging lack of faith in the government, whereas now similar protests are emerging from within the ruling party’s own ranks.

However, a section of BJP leadership claimed that these incidents are part of a well-planned conspiracy aimed at destabilizing Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha’s position.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, who visited Khowai and Hejamara to assess damage caused by alleged attacks on BJP workers by Tipra Motha supporters, strongly condemned the violence. Speaking in the presence of the Chief Secretary JK Sinha, IAS and Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar, IPS, he stated that strict action would be taken against those responsible.

The Chief Minister emphasized that law will take its own course and assured that no one involved in unlawful activities would be spared, regardless of political affiliation. He further stated that such incidents have no place in a democratic system and reiterated that even BJP workers would face action if found violating the law.

The situation remains sensitive, with political tensions continuing to rise across parts of the state.
