A controversy has erupted in Tripura involving alleged political interference in policing and disciplinary action against lower-ranking personnel, raising serious questions about accountability within the system.According to reports, an Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kaulamchara Police Station in Sepahijala district was allegedly threatened over the phone by local MLA Tafajjal Hossain. The incident, described as unethical and intimidating, has drawn criticism as no visible action has been taken by the top police leadership despite provisions under law to proceed against such conduct. The silence of senior authorities has further intensified the debate. In contrast, swift action was taken against a police havildar in an apparently separate but related development. The accused, Saikat Talapatra, who is described as a online journalist and is facing multiple charges including offences against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, was produced before the Belonia District and Sessions Court two days ago.During his court appearance, Talapatra was escorted by police personnel. However, in what is being termed a serious lapse in duty, he was allowed to interact freely with media persons inside the court premises. A journalist recorded his statements on a mobile phone, during which Talapatra made explosive remarks against Chief Minister Manik Saha and BJP leader Papia Dutta. The video quickly went viral on social media, triggering widespread reactions.Following the incident, South Tripura Superintendent of Police Mourya Krishna ordered the suspension of Havildar Ranjit Jamatia on charges of negligence in duty and compromising the security protocol of an accused under custody. Explanations have also been sought from other police personnel involved in escorting the accused.Meanwhile, the situation has sparked deeper concerns within sections of the police force itself. Many officers have reportedly questioned that when Chief Minister Manik Saha repeatedly emphasizes that the law will take its own course and that the law is equal for all, how can a public representative allegedly intimidate a police officer to achieve unlawful objectives and yet no action is initiated? Instead, the police appear to remain silent on the matter, raising questions about consistency and impartiality in law enforcement.

The incident has also led to scrutiny over how an accused in police custody was able to speak at length with the media in the presence of officers, while disciplinary action has been swiftly enforced against lower-ranking staff.

It is also noteworthy that during the same court appearance, Talapatra reportedly expressed lack of confidence in the presiding judge, Gobinda Das. Following this, the judge directed that the case be transferred appropriately to an Additional District and Sessions Court. The twin developments have now triggered a broader debate over political influence, accountability within the police system, and the principle of equality before law in Tripura.
