In a significant development following the alleged assault on Tipra Motha Party’s district women leader Supriya Chowdhury, MLA Ranjit Debbarma has approached the Tripura Human Rights Commission, demanding exemplary punishment for the accused security personnel and concerned officials.

The incident reportedly took place on April 12 in front of the SDM office in Sabroom during the TTAADC elections process. According to the complaint, the violence occurred after polling concluded, when EVMs were being transported. Supriya Chowdhury and other women activists allegedly protested what they described as irregular and unethical conduct by security personnel, following which they were subjected to a brutal assault.

In a written submission addressed to the Commission’s Chairman Arindam Lodh on Monday, the MLA highlighted serious allegations of misconduct and excessive use of force. He claimed that a male security personnel allegedly kicked Supriya Chowdhury from behind with force, while another reportedly beat her with a baton.

The complaint raises critical concerns over the conduct of the forces, especially questioning why male personnel used force against women despite the presence of female police officers at the scene. It also questions why supervising police officer failed to intervene and prevent the alleged assault.

Meanwhile, Supriya Chowdhury has already lodged an FIR at Sabroom Police Station, naming specific accused individuals. According to her complaint, one Dulal Das allegedly kicked her, while another jowan, Govinda Biswas, reportedly assaulted her with a baton. She has submitted video evidence and medical reports to support her claims.

In her statement, Chowdhury said the incident has deeply affected her dignity as a tribal woman leader, calling it not only a physical attack but also an act that undermined her social respect and modesty.

MLA Ranjit Debbarma further informed that he visited Chowdhury’s residence on April 14 to assess her condition. He strongly condemned the incident, stating, “Such police brutality in a democratic process is unacceptable. We will continue the legal fight until the guilty are punished.”
