Even as other leaders including ministers failed to deliver on high hopes of cadres and supporters in the just-concluded ADC election, the lone woman minister in the state cabinet Santana Chakma has achieved a remarkable success by ensuring a comfortable victory for BJP candidate Manju Rani Sarkar from the Machhmara (general) ADC constituency. In the electoral fight for this seat the ‘Tipra Motha’ candidate Swapan Kumar Chakma secured 8981 votes while the BJP candidate Manju Rani Sarkar got 13,700 votes , winning the seat by a fairly big margin of 4719 votes. There was no candidate of the left front in the seat and the Congress candidate got only 2503 votes.
Shortly after counting of votes was over victorious Manju Sarkar came out joyfully and embraced the minister Santana Chakma who had planned the entire campaign and mobilized the party cadres and resources to register the win. “Soon after the campaign for the election began I was hopeful of victory as our ‘Didi’ Santana started working in right earnest day and night to ensure I won the seat for BJP; the electorate in the constituency also responded warmly to our campaign and all this was possible because of the initiatives taken by Santana ‘Didi’: I shall remain eternally grateful to her” said a euphoric Manju Rani Sarkar. She also promised to work hard to deliver on promises made to the electorate before the election.
