The TTAADC elections in Tripura have witnessed a disturbing surge in political violence, with more than 50 incidents reported from various parts of the state during and after the polls. The situation has sparked serious concerns among political observers and the public, particularly over the alleged lack of strong police action in many of these cases.
In the latest incident, three BJP workers were injured in an alleged attack by supporters of Tipra Motha at Tulashikhar in Khowai district yesterday morning and earlier at Karamchara. The violence reportedly broke out amid heightened post-poll tensions, leading to panic among local residents.
According to available information, the injured individuals were first admitted to Khowai District Hospital. Due to the severity of their injuries, they were later shifted to GB Hospital in Agartala for advanced treatment. At least one of the injured is reported to be in serious condition.
BJP leader Bipin Debbarma has strongly condemned the attack. State BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee and the party’s state general secretary Bipin Debbarma visited GB Hospital to inquire about the condition of the injured workers. The party has demanded strict action against those responsible and called for immediate intervention to ensure the safety of its workers.
A police case has reportedly been registered, and an investigation is said to be underway. However, allegations persist that in many of the over 50 violent incidents linked to the TTAADC polls, effective police action has been lacking. Critics argue that the absence of visible enforcement measures has contributed to a sense of impunity among miscreants.
Adding to the tension, another incident has been reported from the 4 No. Karamchhara constituency, day before yesterday where allegations have surfaced that violence was resorted to after sensing possible electoral defeat. It has been claimed that, fearing loss in the polls, Tipra Motha supporters turned to intimidation and violent tactics.
In this incident, a BJP worker was reportedly injured in the attack and is currently undergoing treatment at Manu Hospital. The incident has drawn sharp condemnation from senior leader Bimal Kanti Chakma, who termed it highly condemnable and demanded immediate and strict action against those responsible.
Local sources indicate that political tensions had been building up in several regions following the ADC elections, eventually erupting into violence. The situation in Tulashikhar and other affected areas is now reportedly under control, with police deploying additional forces to prevent further escalation.
Despite these measures, the broader concern remains over maintaining law and order and ensuring accountability. Citizens and civil society groups are urging the administration to take impartial and decisive action to prevent further deterioration of peace in the state.
The TTAADC polls, meant to strengthen grassroots democratic governance in tribal areas, are now overshadowed by violence and allegations of administrative inaction, raising critical questions about security and political stability in Tripura.
