Tripura’s ADC elections witnessed a sharp escalation in violence after the afternoon, even as fresh political allegations added to the growing controversy surrounding the conduct of the polls. Alongside clashes between supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Tipra Motha, the Communist Party of India has formally raised serious concerns over law-and-order violations and alleged inaction by election officials.

In a written complaint submitted to the State Election Commission on April 12, CPI Tripura State Council Secretary Milan Baidya alleged multiple instances of unlawful gatherings and intimidation at polling stations in Santirbazar subdivision. The complaint specifically mentioned disturbances at polling stations numbered 26/33, 26/34, 26/36, and 26/37.

According to the CPI, polling agents were allegedly chased and threatened, creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation that could undermine free and fair elections. The party further claimed that repeated attempts to contact the Returning Officer-cum-SDM of Santirbazar went unanswered.

The complaint also named Sector Officer Sridam Das, alleging failure to take appropriate action and accusing officials of giving dismissive responses instead of addressing serious grievances. CPI stated that such negligence not only emboldens unlawful elements but also compromises the transparency of the electoral process.

These allegations come amid already escalating violence across key polling areas. After the afternoon, clashes between BJP and Tipra Motha supporters intensified across Takarjala, Mandai, Golaghati, and later Khumulwng, turning several polling zones into conflict hotspots.

Incidents of bomb explosions, vandalism, and physical assaults were reported from multiple locations, including Olay Chhara and areas near Charan Pai SB School. Panic gripped voters, many of whom fled polling stations fearing for their safety.

Despite a high voter turnout of around 78% across the state, the surge in violence and now formal complaints from CPI have raised serious questions about the conduct of the ADC elections. Authorities have deployed heavy police and TSR forces in sensitive areas, but tensions continue to remain high.

The State Election Commission is yet to officially respond to the allegations, even as political tensions and sporadic incidents of violence persist across the state.
