In a dramatic development following the conclusion of campaigning for the ADC elections, a serious allegation of rape has been filed against Tipra Motha candidate Dhirendra Debbarma, contesting from the Demchhara–Kachuchhara constituency. The complaint was lodged at the West Agartala Women Police Station late on Friday night.

According to police sources, police already accepted the FIR and registered the case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The complainant, a tribal woman residing in a rented house in the Supareebagan area of Agartala, alleged that the incident occurred on March 15 at her residence in Krishnanagar. In her written complaint to the police, she stated that Dhirendra Debbarma, son of Dattaram Debbarma from Ghumulung under Radhapur Police Station, visited her house around 2 PM on the pretext of collecting her academic documents and allegedly raped her.

She further stated that she had come into contact with the accused on January 10 while searching for employment. Debbarma had reportedly assured her of a job in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council and asked her to provide her Madhyamik examination documents. The alleged incident took place when he came to collect those documents.

The victim claimed that due to fear of social stigma and mental trauma, she initially remained silent but later approached the police seeking justice and a proper investigation.

Following the complaint, the police registered a case (No. 12/2026) and immediately initiated action. A significant security deployment, including state police, TSR, and central forces was mobilized for the arrest operation, especially considering the sensitivity of the case and the remote hill area involved.

Police officials indicated that arresting an accused in a rape case is a mandatory duty under law, and efforts were underway to ensure the operation is conducted smoothly without any obstruction.

However, as of Saturday morning, there was no confirmed report of Dhirendra Debbarma’s arrest.

The incident has triggered sharp political reactions. Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma alleged that the case is politically motivated. He claimed that the BJP candidate in the constituency is facing certain defeat, and therefore, a conspiracy has been hatched to malign the image of the Tipra Motha candidate.

He further alleged that the complainant was paid Rs. 2 lakh to file the FIR, though no evidence has been publicly presented to substantiate this claim.
