Ahead of the crucial elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), senior BJP leader and former MP Rebati Tripura on Friday asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to secure a decisive victory, projecting that the party will win between 17 and 21 out of the 28 seats.

Addressing the media on the final day of campaigning, Rebati Tripura said that feedback from grassroots workers and voters indicates strong support in favour of the BJP. He appealed to the electorate to vote for the party’s Lotus symbol to ensure a stable and decisive mandate in the council.

The BJP’s claim comes in sharp contrast to the confidence expressed by Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, founder of the Tipra Motha Party, who has stated that his party is likely to win at least 24 seats in the council.

Polling for the TTAADC elections is scheduled for April 12, while counting of votes will take place on April 17.

During the interaction, Rebati Tripura also defended the BJP’s manifesto proposal to rename the TTAADC as the “Tripura Territorial Autonomous Council (TATC).” He argued that the existing name is lengthy and redundant.

“TTAADC is too long, we are only shortening it. The current nomenclature includes Tripura, Tribal, Autonomous, Areas, and District, all together,” he said.

Responding to criticism, the former MP remarked that opposition to the proposal stems either from a lack of understanding or political motivations. “Those opposing it are not literate enough to understand, and even some literate individuals are opposing it for political reasons,” he added.

The BJP’s renaming proposal has triggered strong reactions among sections of the Tiprasa community, with many alleging that such a move could dilute the constitutional safeguards provided under the Sixth Schedule and weaken the autonomy of the council.

Critics have also pointed out that the BJP had earlier promised the formation of a Tipra Territorial Council (TTC) and support for the 125th Constitutional Amendment to further empower the TTAADC. However, these commitments were later rolled back, raising questions about the party’s intent.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Manik Saha has repeatedly expressed confidence during campaign rallies that the BJP will achieve an absolute majority in the TTAADC elections. He emphasized that such a mandate would pave the way for a triple engine government in Tripura, aligning governance at the central, state, and council levels.

With both BJP and Tipra Motha making strong and contrasting claims, the upcoming TTAADC election is set to be a closely watched political contest in Tripura’s tribal areas.
