Amid rising political tensions surrounding the upcoming ADC elections, a section of retired tribal intellectuals and former bureaucrats in Tripura has voiced deep concern over attempts to fuel division among communities.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Agartala Press Club under the banner of the Assembly of Retired Tribal Intellectuals and Scholars of Tripura, former Law Secretary Data Mohan Jamatia strongly criticized what he described as “divisive political narratives” being promoted in the state.

Without directly naming any political parties, his remarks were widely seen as targeting Tipra Motha and Indigenous People's Front of Tripura. He accused certain groups of exploiting tribal sentiments for political gain, alleging that slogans like “Greater Tipraland” are misleading and emotionally manipulating indigenous communities.

Jamatia emphasized that the idea of “Tipraland” is being used to create confusion among tribal populations. He pointed out that the overall development of tribal communities in Tripura has historically depended on cooperation between tribal and non-tribal populations. Highlighting a key historical fact, he noted that the establishment of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council was made possible with the support of Bengali legislators in the State Assembly.

He further alleged that instead of addressing real issues within the ADC areas, such as the deteriorating condition of education, healthcare, and infrastructure—political leaders are raising unrealistic slogans that create unrest and instability. According to him, claims that tribal communities lack cultural, social, and economic protection are exaggerated and misleading.

Jamatia warned that such narratives could damage the long-standing harmony between tribal and non-tribal communities in Tripura. He stressed that maintaining unity between both sections is essential for the state’s overall progress and prosperity.

The press conference concluded with a collective appeal from the retired intellectuals, urging all political stakeholders to refrain from divisive politics and to focus instead on constructive development and communal harmony.
