Tension gripped parts of Teliamura in Khowai district on Tuesday after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleged that miscreants opened fire and attempted a grenade attack targeting vehicles carrying party supporters heading to a public rally addressed by Chief Minister Manik Saha.
According to BJP sources, the incident took place in the Parakalk area near Mereng Bazar in Teliamura during the afternoon hours. The attackers allegedly fired three rounds of bullets at vehicles carrying supporters and also attempted to trigger a grenade explosion, reportedly with the intention of disrupting the Chief Minister’s public meeting.
Following the incident, a large contingent of police and security personnel was deployed in the area to bring the situation under control and ensure the rally proceeded without further disruption.
Addressing the gathering later, Chief Minister Manik Saha strongly condemned the incident and alleged that workers of Tipra Motha Party were behind the attack. He claimed that party supporters were obstructed and intimidated on their way to the rally, and that firearms were used to create panic.
Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said that
knowing their defeat in the ADC elections is certain, they are trying to bring back the violent political culture of the 1970s,” the Chief Minister said, accusing Tipra Motha of resorting to terror tactics.
He further asserted that no amount of threats, violence, or obstruction would be able to stop the BJP’s victory in the ADC polls.
Despite the alleged attack, the rally was held at the Parakalk School Ground in Duskir area under Teliamura. The Chief Minister also addressed a large gathering in support of BJP candidates Rajesh Debbarma (Mandai-Pulinpur constituency) and Billo Jamatia (Maharani-Teliamura constituency).
The event was also attended by Minister Bikash Debbarma along with other party leaders.
