Natural wear and tear worsened by lack of care on the party of Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) authority have made the overhead power transmission lines in different parts of the state a source of great danger. This came out in sharp relief at Ambassa town, headquarter of the Dhalai district this morning. For a long time a torn transmission wire had been lying on the ground without being removed from the main connection in the nearby post by the local TSECL authority. But around 9-00 in the morning today a Tom Tom passing by the road where the live wire had fallen got in touch with it and the vehicle immediately caught fire.
Even though the fire was doused quickly by the driver and other people including his fellow drivers on the spot, this angered all the autorickshaw and Tom Tom drivers and they launched a blockade on the Agartala-Churaibari national highway at Ambassa town. The blockade continued for a long time, paralysing the traffic movement on both sides of the highway and the police personnel from the Ambassa station intervened in the matter but the Tom Tom driver remained adamant and refused to withdraw the blockade.
Finally the vice chairman of the Ambassa municipal council reached spot and spoke to the blockading Tom Tom drivers, convincing them that he will take up the issue with the TSECL authority so that no such incident occurs in future. Finally, considering public inconvenience the Tom Tom drivers withdrew the blockade but demanded compensation for the driver whose Tom Tom had been burnt down by the fire caused by the fallen power transmission line on the road. They asserted that unless the compensation is paid they will be forced to resume the blockade withdrawn today.
