The ruling BJP’s strategy of weakening the ‘Tipra Motha’ by luring leaders and workers of the party into the BJP fold in the run-up to the April 12 ADC polls seems to be yielding dividends. Fed up with the dictatorial style of the functioning of the ‘Motha’ supremo Pradyot Kishore and his failure to make the ADC a vibrant institution for tribal development many leaders of the party including senior women leaders have started joining the BJP .

It was on Monday night that the chief minister Dr Manik Saha had been holding an important strategy meeting with state president Rajeev Bhattacharjee, other organisational leaders , MLAs and ministers in the state BJP headquarter at Krishna Nagar. It was on the sidelines of this meeting that the ‘Tipra Motha’ women wing general secretary Mary Debbarma, Surma block committee general secretary Birajit Debbarma, Surma block vice president Sanju Debbarma and another leader Rinku Debbarma joined the BJP by accepting party flags from the chief minister Dr Manik Saha and state president Rajeev Bhattacharjee. This is being considered by political observers as a big blow to the ‘Tipra Motha’ in the run-up to the ADC polls.

Besides, BJP has already put up several new entrants from ‘Tipra Motha’ as party candidates for the ADC polls. They include incumbent executive member (EM) Ananta Debbarma, MDC Saudagar Koloi and former district president Rajesh Debbarma. They are contesting Halahali-Asharambari seat, Ampi Nagar seat and Mandai-Pulinpur constituencies on BJP tickets. Sources said that more ‘Tipra Motha’ leaders are waiting to join the BJP in the days to come as most of them are fed up with the politics of ‘Tipra Motha’ and its autocratic leadership. “In almost all the ADC constituencies the BJP candidates are evoking strong response from the predominantly tribal electorate and this will be reflected in the poll outcome also ; this is the reason why the ‘Tipra Motha’ has now started resorting to violence but this will boomerang on them” said a senior leader of BJP.
