In a significant political development in Tripura, the TIPRA Motha Party has formally lodged a complaint with the State Election Commission against Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma, alleging serious violations of the Model Code of Conduct during the ongoing TTAADC election campaign.
According to the complaint letter dated March 31, 2026, the party has raised strong objections to a controversial statement allegedly made by the minister during an election rally in the 9-Hala Hal-Asharambari (ST) constituency. As per TIPRA Motha, the minister publicly claimed that 'no matter where a voter presses the EVM button, the vote will ultimately go in favour of the BJP.'
The statement has triggered sharp reactions across opposition parties, including TIPRA Motha, CPI(M), and Congress, who have termed it deeply alarming and indicative of a possible attempt to undermine electoral integrity.
TIPRA Motha, in its complaint, stated that such remarks could create confusion and mistrust among voters regarding the sanctity and independence of their vote. The party argued that the statement directly violates the Model Code of Conduct by attempting to mislead and unduly influence voters through false and alarming claims.
The party further expressed concern that the remarks were made by a sitting minister holding the Tribal Welfare portfolio, which is closely linked with the TTAADC administration. According to the complaint, this sends an inappropriate message about the neutrality and fairness of the electoral process.
In addition to the controversial statement, TIPRA Motha has also alleged misuse of government machinery. The complaint cites reports suggesting that official government vehicles were used by the minister for transporting campaign materials such as flags and pamphlets, which would constitute another violation of election norms.
Despite the seriousness of the allegations, no action has reportedly been taken so far by the State Election Commission. This has further intensified criticism from opposition parties, who are demanding immediate and strict legal action against the minister.
Notably, Minister Bikash Debbarma has not issued any public clarification or denial regarding the alleged statement, adding to the ongoing political tension.
TIPRA Motha has urged the Election Commission to conduct a fair and impartial investigation into the matter and take stringent steps to uphold the integrity of the electoral process in Tripura.
