A sharp contrast has emerged in Tripura between TTAADC areas grassroots distress over drinking water scarcity and national recognition for development initiatives, as nearly 50 families in Kathalia block threaten to boycott the upcoming ADC elections.Residents of Kalikhola ADC village, specifically Jagat Das Bairagi Para and Bhel Kumar Chowdhury Para under Kathalia block have voiced strong resentment after years of failed appeals for clean drinking water. Women from the affected families, including Manju Rani Debbarma, Gita Rani Tripura, Bishu Rani Tripura, and Fatema Akhtar, told reporters on Sunday that despite repeated requests to both the state government and ADC administration, no permanent solution has been provided.According to them, pipelines were installed years ago, but water has never flowed through them. With no alternative, villagers are forced to collect and consume contaminated pond water, leading to various health issues among children and elderly residents. Frustrated by years of neglect, the villagers have now issued a firm warning: if safe drinking water is not ensured before the elections, they will not step into polling booths. The protest sentiment is particularly significant as it comes ahead of the ADC elections, with tribal voters in the Kathalia Mirza-Rajapur constituency openly declaring a boycott unless their demands are met. Locals allege that despite informing elected representatives, village leaders, and officials from the Public Health Engineering Department multiple times, they have received only assurances without action.Even as the crisis unfolds, Tripura’s development efforts received national attention during the latest episode of PM Mann Ki Baat. Speaking in the 132nd edition of the programme, Narendra Modi highlighted innovative water management and solar energy initiatives in the state.Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, who participated in a listening event at Badharghat near Agartala, stated that the Prime Minister’s mention of the state reflects its growing national importance. He pointed out that innovative drinking water solutions implemented in remote areas like Jampui Hills were praised at the national level. The Chief Minister also expressed confidence that Tripura would soon achieve 100% coverage under the Jal Jeevan Mission, aimed at providing tap water connections to every household. In his address, the Prime Minister also referred to the success of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, noting its impact in expanding solar energy adoption across rural India. He specifically cited Tripura’s tribal regions, where solar mini-grids have brought reliable electricity to previously underserved villages, improving education, communication, and overall quality of life.Villages in Reang-dominated areas, once plagued by power shortages, are now witnessing transformative changes. In places like Khowai district’s Mungiakami block, solar electrification has illuminated homes of economically disadvantaged families, marking a shift from darkness to development.Additionally, the Prime Minister praised rainwater harvesting efforts in Bangmun village, where rooftop systems have enabled efficient water conservation and reduced dependence on external sources. He described it as a model for other regions facing water scarcity.

While Tripura earns accolades for innovation and infrastructure improvements at the national level, the situation in Kathalia underscores persistent gaps in last-mile service delivery. The unfolding boycott threat reflects a deeper governance challenge, bridging the divide between policy success and ground-level implementation.

As the ADC elections approach, all eyes will be on whether authorities can address the immediate concerns of these 50 families and restore faith in the system.
