A delegation of Congress led by PCC general secretary Prashanta Senchowdhury, Pradesh SC department chairman NIranjan Das and leaders Jibon Saha and Manmohan Reang met in deputation with the state election commissioner Manoj Kumar and submitted a memorandum of protest , signed by PCC president Asish Kumar Saha, against the violation of model code of conduct by the BJP in the by-election to Dharma Nagar assembly constituency as also in the ADC polls.
Speaking media persons on this issue in the Congress Bhawan today , the PCC spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty said that since the process of by-election to Dharma Nagar as also the ADC election commenced through formal notification the ruling BJP has been consistently violating the model code of conduct. He said that large amounts of money are being distributed among voters in Dharma Nagar as also in ADC areas under so-called government subsidy scheme to entice them to vote for BJp candidates.
“It is well known that Prime Ministers Employment Guarantee Programme (PMEGP) is a highly subsidised scheme of the government of India and the government gives between 30-35% subsidy to selected beneficiaries under this scheme ; now with the election knocking on the door the head office of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) have started giving large amounts of so-called subsidies of thousands of rupees to the beneficiaries through direct benefit transfer (DBG) among voters in Dharma Nagar and in ADC areas” said Prabir.
Describing this as gross violation of mode code of conduct (MCC) during elections the Congress spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty said that the party delegation that had met the state election commissioner had pointed this irregularity and electoral corruption out demanding action. ‘But so far nothing has been done ; we strongly ;demand that such DBT process be stopped forthwith because it is nothing but electoral corruption that is banned under the Representation of Peoples Act-1951” said Prabir Chakraborty.
