A fresh political controversy has erupted in Tripura following a statement by state minister Bikash Debbarma regarding the functioning of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). His remarks have triggered sharp reactions from opposition parties and raised questions within political circles.

Speaking at a recent public gathering, the minister claimed that even if votes are cast for the Tipra Motha party, they would ultimately be counted in favor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This statement has led to intense debate and concern over the credibility of the electoral process.

Political analysts and election experts have strongly refuted such claims. According to them, India’s EVM system operates under a strict and transparent protocol. Each vote is securely recorded for the candidate selected by the voter, and there is no mechanism that allows votes to be transferred or manipulated in favor of another party. Experts emphasized that the system is designed to ensure accuracy, reliability, and tamper-proof functioning.

They further clarified that EVMs function independently and are subject to multiple layers of checks, including mock polls, sealing procedures, and verification through VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail). These safeguards make any form of large-scale manipulation highly improbable.

On the other hand, opposition Tipra Motha parties MLA Ranjit Debbarma have strongly criticized the minister’s remarks, calling them irresponsible and misleading. He also urged the Election Commission to take note of the statement, arguing that such claims could undermine public confidence in the democratic process.

Ranjit Debbarma also warned that spreading doubts about voting systems without evidence may create confusion among voters and potentially impact voter turnout.
