Amid growing internal tensions within the Tipra Motha Party ahead of the crucial ADC elections, senior leader and Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma has made a candid and critical statement, saying that “politics in today’s world cannot survive solely on ethnic emotion.”

In an interview with TripuraInfo, one of Tripura’s most widely read news portals, Debbarma openly addressed the ongoing rift within the party, particularly in the backdrop of the ADC polls. He stressed that a political party cannot afford to change its slogans, ideology, and commitments before every election, as it sends a confusing and misleading message to dedicated party workers, allies, and supporters.

Changing Slogans and Political Messaging Under Scrutiny

Debbarma pointed out a pattern of shifting political narratives within the party leadership. He noted that in 2021, the core slogan was “Greater Tipraland.” However, ahead of the 2023 Assembly elections, the slogan changed to “This is the last fight,” with a shift in focus toward a constitutional solution to the Tiprasa issue.

According to him, the narrative shifted again during the 2024 parliamentary elections, where the emphasis moved toward a “Tiprasa Accord.” He also raised concerns over the decision to field a candidate under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) symbol, alleging that such moves were driven more by personal and familial political ambitions than by the party’s collective interests.

Allegations of Internal Contradictions and Family Politics

Without mincing words, Debbarma criticized the leadership of Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, accusing him of promoting family-centric politics while simultaneously calling for 'Thansa' ( unity ) among the Tiprasa community. He highlighted that members of Pradyot’s own family are politically aligned with different parties, including the Congress and BJP, which he said reflects a contradiction in the call for unity.

He further alleged that emotional appeals to indigenous identity have been used strategically to mobilize voters, while decisions at the top level were influenced by personal political calculations.

Several senior leaders within Tipra Motha, as cited in the report, have also raised serious concerns about alleged corruption in the ADC administration. Animesh Debbarma and many other Tipra Motha Leaders claimed that despite multiple complaints, no investigations were initiated, allegedly to protect close associates of the leadership. Animesh Debbarma accused the party chief of centralizing authority and ignoring dissenting voices within the party. According to him, repeated warnings from senior leaders against divisive or controversial rhetoric were overlooked.

The discontent appears to be deepening, with reports that several elected MDCs and Executive Members have already left the party to join the BJP. Additionally, some MLAs and top leaders are reportedly considering similar moves.

Political observers believe that the ongoing discord, ideological inconsistencies, and leadership disputes could lead to a major split within Tipra Motha by the end of the ADC elections.

Debbarma’s remarks have not only intensified the internal crisis but have also sparked wider debate in Tripura’s political circles about the future direction of the party and its leadership.
