The CPI(M) on Thursday organised an election rally at Khumulwng, the headquarters of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), in the run-up to the council polls.

Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury addressed the gathering as the main speaker. Senior party leaders, including Manik Dey, Tapan Das and Naresh Jamatia, were also present.

Addressing the rally, Chaudhury criticised the BJP and Tipra Motha, alleging that key issues concerning the tribal population had not been adequately addressed. He claimed that both parties were contesting the elections separately while indirectly benefiting each other.

He further alleged that neither side had taken concrete steps to persuade the Centre to pass the 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill, which seeks to provide greater autonomy to the TTAADC.

Referring to recent exchanges between Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarman and Chief Minister Manik Saha, the CPI(M) leader questioned why the alliance between the parties at the state level had not been reconsidered despite public differences.

The rally forms part of the party’s campaign activities ahead of the TTAADC polls scheduled next month.
