Agartala’s growing night-time insecurity came into sharp focus after a gruesome murder of a 31-year-old man, Krishna Bhattacharjee, whose body was found with his face and head brutally smashed at Lalmatia Shopping Complex in Maharajganj Bipani Bitan on Tuesday morning.

According to police, the victim, a former tiles worker from West Pratapgarh, had been struggling with drug addiction for the past one and a half years and was reportedly staying frequently in the market area. His body bore multiple injury marks, and drug paraphernalia, including syringes, were found scattered near the scene, indicating possible involvement of substance abuse activity.

Initial investigation suggests the murder may have occurred late Monday night during an alleged illegal gathering involving drug use and other unlawful activities in the market complex after shops had closed. Police have detained a few suspected drug users, but the motive behind the killing and the identities of the main culprits remain unclear.

Following the incident, tension gripped the Maharajganj market area, with local traders expressing serious concerns over safety. In a press interaction, members of the business community demanded immediate and effective action from the police to curb rising crime, drug abuse, and illegal activities in the area during night hours.

Despite repeated reports in local media about increasing drug-related activities and disorder in the area, traders alleged that adequate preventive measures were not taken. The incident has now raised serious questions about policing and security arrangements in Agartala, especially during night time.
