5 Tipra Motha Leaders Join BJP Ahead of ADC Polls, No Major Split Yet, But Political Signals Intensify

In a significant political development ahead of the upcoming ADC elections in Tripura, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday inducted several leaders from Tipra Motha into its fold. The joining ceremony took place at the BJP state headquarters in Agartala in the presence of Chief Minister Manik Saha and state BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee.
Despite sustained efforts, the BJP has not been able to engineer a major split in Tipra Motha ahead of the ADC polls. However, Tuesday’s development indicates a gradual shift, with at least five leaders from Tipra Motha switching sides.
Among the prominent entrants are ADC’s MDC Sadagar Koloi and Executive Member Ananta Debbarma, along with party leaders Rajesh Debbarma, Tashiram Reang, and Suryabashi Molsum. Several party workers and supporters also joined the BJP during the programme, signaling grassroots-level movement alongside leadership changes.
Sources suggest that Dolly Reang may also join the BJP in the near future, further adding to the momentum. Meanwhile, although there were indications of a possible defection by minister Animesh Debbarma, he did not switch parties on this occasion. Interestingly, none of the leaders who joined the BJP directly criticized Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma. However, they collectively alleged that many leaders within Tipra Motha are involved in corruption, raising serious questions about internal functioning within the party.
While the absence of a large-scale defection may come as a relief for Tipra Motha, the BJP’s continued inroads, especially at the ADC level, indicate a shifting political landscape in Tripura ahead of the crucial elections.
