In a dramatic political development ahead of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections, the much-anticipated alliance between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and TIPRA Motha has failed to materialize, deepening uncertainty in the state’s tribal political landscape.
TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma has категорically rejected the BJP’s proposed 50:50 seat-sharing formula. Despite making last-minute efforts to reach a respectable agreement with the BJP’s central leadership in Delhi earlier today, negotiations ultimately collapsed.
Sources indicate that the BJP was unwilling to offer more than 14 seats to TIPRA Motha, which the regional party found unacceptable. Following the deadlock, Pradyot Debbarma released a video statement announcing that TIPRA Motha will contest the ADC elections independently.
In his message, Debbarma stated that he could not betray the Tiprasa people by accepting an unfavorable deal, emphasizing that the party’s commitment to indigenous rights remains non-negotiable. However, in a strategic move, he couldn't clarified that whether TIPRA Motha will continue to support the BJP-led government in Tripura for now, ruling out any immediate withdrawal of support.
Interestingly, political circles are now abuzz with speculation of a possible post-poll alliance between BJP and TIPRA Motha, even though a pre-poll understanding has failed. “No pre-poll alliance, but post-poll cooperation is possible,” is the emerging narrative in state politics.
Meanwhile, reactions from party supporters have been mixed. Some grassroots voices argue that continuing support to the BJP while contesting separately may confuse voters, with critics suggesting that the move could split anti-BJP votes rather than present a united opposition.
With only two days left for nomination filing, the failure to resolve alliance issues has intensified political activity. A crucial BJP core committee meeting is scheduled this evening at Kushabhau Thakre Bhavan, where the party is expected to finalize its electoral strategy for the ADC polls.
Adding to the evolving scenario, the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) has already announced its candidate list for 9 out of the 28 seats in the TTAADC, signaling the beginning of a multi-cornered contest.
As the deadline approaches, Tripura’s ADC elections are shaping up to be a high-stakes and closely watched political battle, with shifting alliances and strategic calculations likely to play a decisive role in determining the outcome.
