In a crucial turn of events ahead of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s central leadership in New Delhi has formally offers a 50:50 seat-sharing formula to Tipra Motha for TTAADC election. However, the proposal has not gone down well with the Tipra Motha party, leading to continued uncertainty over a possible electoral alliance.

Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma has reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the offer, considering it inadequate in view of the party’s political strength in the ADC areas. Despite this, he is making sustained efforts in New Delhi to negotiate a more honourable and politically viable arrangement with the BJP.

Sources indicate that Pradyot Debbarma is actively engaging with senior BJP leaders, trying to secure additional concessions that would reflect Tipra Motha’s electoral base and previous performance. His primary objective is to ensure that any alliance does not undermine the party’s credibility among indigenous voters, while also keeping the door open for a strategic understanding with the ruling party.

At the heart of Tipra Motha’s concerns is the demand for greater seat allocation beyond the 50% mark, especially in constituencies where the party had performed strongly in previous ADC elections. Additionally, the party continues to seek clear assurances on key political commitments, including issues related to the Tiprasa Accord and indigenous rights.

Despite internal dissatisfaction, Pradyot Debbarma is understood to be working tirelessly to prevent a complete breakdown of talks. His approach signals a willingness to maintain an electoral understanding with the BJP, provided that the final agreement is seen as respectable and beneficial for Tipra Motha’s long-term political positioning.

Meanwhile, the delay in finalizing the deal has added to the suspense surrounding the ADC polls. If negotiations fail to yield a breakthrough, Tipra Motha is likely to contest the elections independently, which could significantly alter the electoral dynamics in the tribal council areas.

Political observers believe that the next round of discussions in New Delhi will be decisive. The outcome will not only determine the future of BJP–Tipra Motha relations but also shape the broader political landscape of Tripura ahead of the ADC elections.

According to sources, the BJP has proposed a 50:50 seat-sharing formula to Tipra Motha. However, Tipra Motha Founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma has firmly rejected this offer, insisting that the party must retain control over the 18 seats it had previously won. In addition, the party has demanded allocation of Chhawmanu (possibly referred) and Kanchanpur seats, along with a clear and time-bound commitment on the implementation of the Tiprasa Accord.

Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma is currently in New Delhi and is actively engaged in negotiations to reach a consensus with the BJP leadership. He has already held discussions with senior BJP leaders BL Santosh and Sambit Patra. Despite these efforts, no final decision has been reached yet.

Sources indicate that another round of talks is likely to take place tomorrow. If no agreement is finalized by then, Pradyot Kishore Debbarma is expected to return to Tripura on the 23rd and proceed to announce Tipra Motha’s candidate list independently.

Meanwhile, internal developments within Tipra Motha suggest that the party may explore an alternative alliance with the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT). A preliminary discussion has already taken place between Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma and IPFT leader Swapna Debbarma regarding a possible seat-sharing arrangement.

However, sources within Tipra Motha reveal growing resistance at the grassroots level against any alliance with the BJP. Many party leaders and supporters reportedly believe that the BJP’s top leadership has a history of not honoring commitments, leading to reluctance over entering into an electoral understanding.

On the other hand, divisions are also visible within the BJP. Several senior state leaders are reportedly not in favor of an alliance with Tipra Motha for the ADC elections. Earlier, Chief Minister Manik Saha had publicly stated that the BJP would contest the ADC polls independently. A reversal of this stance could potentially impact his political image.

Despite this, Dr. Manik Saha has today indicated that the BJP is committed to maintaining coalition principles (jot-dharma), suggesting openness to an alliance if directed by the central leadership. He also clarified that the final decision on seat-sharing will be taken by the party’s central leadership in New Delhi.

As the deadline approaches, all eyes are now on the next round of talks in Delhi tomorrow.
