A major controversy has emerged after details of significant government expenditure on Supreme Court cases came to light. According to information disclosed in the State Assembly, the state government is currently contesting 93 cases in the Supreme Court.
Over the past three years, the government has spent approximately Rs.3.82 crore from the public exchequer to fight these cases. Out of this, nearly Rs.3.43 crore has been spent solely on advocate fees, accounting for the largest portion of the total expenditure.
The information surfaced in response to a question raised by MLA Sudip Roy Barman during a recent Assembly session. Following this disclosure, concerns have been raised across political circles as well as among the general public regarding the scale and necessity of such spending.
Experts point out that while litigation in the Supreme Court is inherently expensive, both the number of cases and the magnitude of expenditure appear significant. This has triggered debates on whether some of these legal battles could have been avoided, or whether better cost-control measures could have been implemented.
So far, there has been no detailed official response from the government. However, sources within the administration suggest that these cases involve important policy and administrative matters, making the legal expenses unavoidable.
Nevertheless, a critical question continues to resonate among citizens:
Whose interests are being served by spending crores of taxpayers’ money on these legal battles?
Observers believe this issue is likely to intensify political and public debate in the coming days.
