Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury on Thursday highlighted a severe shortage of teachers and staff in Tripura’s Education Department during the general discussion on the state budget, raising serious concerns over the future of education in the state. Presenting a comparative analysis, Chaudhury stated that the number of regular government employees in Tripura has declined significantly over the years. As of January 2018, the state had 1,58,220 regular employees, which has now reduced to 1,48,501 in 2026–27, marking a drop of 9,719 employees. He further pointed out that between 2018–19 and 2025–26, a total of 35,835 employees retired, but adequate recruitment has not been made to fill the gap. Focusing specifically on the Education Department, Chaudhury revealed alarming figures. In 2018–19, the department had 50,382 teachers and staff. This number has now fallen sharply to 28,470 in 2026–27, indicating a massive shortage of 21,912 personnel. He questioned how educational progress is possible without sufficient teachers and professors, stating that merely establishing new universities would not improve the ground reality. He urged the government to adopt practical, balanced planning to restore equilibrium in the education system.
