Delay in Agartala Lighthouse Housing Project Exposed in Assembly, Completion Stretched Beyond Initial Promise

A significant delay in the much-publicized Lighthouse housing project at Agartala’s Gol Chakkar area came under scrutiny in the Tripura Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, following a question raised by CPI(M) MLA Sudip Sarkar.
Raising an unstarred question, the MLA sought clarity on when the construction of the Lighthouse project
originally envisioned as a landmark urban housing initiative
would be completed.
Responding on behalf of the Urban Development Department, Chief Minister Manik Saha informed the House that the project is still under progress. He stated that a total of seven residential towers are being constructed to accommodate around 1,000 families.
According to the official reply, the first tower is expected to be completed by June 2026, while the remaining towers will be finished in a phased manner over time. The government also cited dependence on external factors such as supply of construction materials and availability of skilled labour as reasons affecting the pace of work.
The issue gains political significance when viewed against earlier commitments. In 2018, the then Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb had announced that 1,000 flats under the project would be completed within a year, projecting it as a historic achievement in urban housing.
However, the current status presented in the Assembly reflects a considerable gap between the initial promise and the ground reality. Through his question, Sudip Sarkar effectively brought this delay into the public domain.
Notably, concerns remain unaddressed regarding the financial security of individuals who had booked flats in the project by paying substantial amounts. The Chief Minister’s reply did not clarify who would bear responsibility in case of further delays or uncertainties faced by these allottees.
The Lighthouse project, once seen as a model for modern urban housing in Tripura, now faces increasing public and political scrutiny as delays continue to mount.
